Everything You Need to Know About Ketamine Therapy

A comprehensive guide to IV ketamine infusion therapy at East End Neuropsych — what to expect, how it works, costs, and how to prepare for your infusion.

1

Treatment Protocol

Patients typically receive a series of up to 6 infusions over 2–3 weeks for mood disorders. Your specific protocol is customized based on your diagnosis and response to treatment. Medication dosing is based on evidence-based studies which are widely available and reviewed regularly.

Infusion Duration
90 minutes
per infusion session
Total Visit
~3 hours
allow for monitoring
Success Rate
70–75%
in clinical trials
Important: IV ketamine treatment requires maintenance (booster) infusions to keep patients symptom-free, along with ongoing oral medications. You'll need medical clearance from your primary care provider or neurologist if being used for depression related to Parkinson's Disease.
2

Preparing for Your Infusion

To ensure your safety and the best possible treatment experience, please follow these preparation guidelines:

Fast 6 hours before your infusion. No food or drink except small sips of water.
No Lamictal or benzodiazepines the morning of your infusion (consult your provider about other medications).
No alcohol for 24 hours before and 24 hours after your infusion.
Arrange a ride home. You cannot drive after your infusion — ask a friend/family member, or call an Uber, Lyft, or Taxi. We can help you call if needed.
You must be able to transfer into and out of a recliner on your own and remain in place for up to two hours.
Do not make important decisions on the day of your infusion. Plan for a quiet, restful evening.
⚠ Zero-Tolerance Safety Policy: No person will be allowed to drive home after an infusion under any circumstances. Driving under the influence of a controlled substance is illegal and will result in immediate dismissal of care from East End Neuropsych.
3

During Your Infusion

Our clinical process is methodical, safe, and comfortable. Here's exactly what happens from arrival to the start of your medication:

Check-In & Vitals
We record your weight and a full set of vital signs to establish a baseline.
Patient Monitoring
You're connected to a patient monitor tracking heart rate, oxygen saturation, EKG, and blood pressure throughout.
IV Placement
The clinician inserts an IV into your hand or arm and begins the medication flow.
Can Be Stopped Anytime
If any side effects develop, the medication can be stopped immediately. You're in control of your comfort.

Can I Bring Someone with Me?

You're welcome to bring a guest, but this is a very personal decision. Some people find a companion comforting; others find it increases anxiety. We generally recommend coming alone, as the infusion is a personal journey — but the choice is yours.

If a guest stays in the room, we ask them to sit quietly without talking or moving. We keep the room mellow with only guided meditation or soothing sounds. Alternately, guests can wait in our comfortable waiting room — we'll call them when you're ready to be picked up.

4

After Your Treatment

By the time you're ready to leave the office, your overall condition will be close to normal. Some patients return immediately to their normal routine or go back to work; others prefer to go home and take a brief nap — either is fine.

⏱ When Will I Feel Better?

Mood improvement does not occur immediately. The earliest you can expect to feel relief is within a few hours of leaving the office — often by the next day.

🚗 One Key Restriction

You must refrain from driving until the following day. Beyond that, there are no other lifestyle restrictions after your infusion.

📞 Questions After?
